UN and partners seek $49.6 million to help 84,000 people affected by Nepal flash floods

Attachments • Download Report (PDF | 1.12 MB) At 08:40 AM on 26 August, as people along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers were starting their day, an ice and rock avalanche near the Lhende River in Tibet, China, sent a wall of water, mud and rock into Nepal at Rasuwagadhi. The surge briefly dammed the Lhende Khola, burst through and ran the length of the corridor, reaching Devghat by mid-afternoon at a flow an order of magnitude above anything the monsoon normally brings. It took the valley floor, and with it the homes, markets, hydropower plants and border road that hold life in this narrow valley together. For this appeal, the Humanitarian Country Team estimates that 84,270 people in 17 affected municipalities in 6 districts, about 19,284 households, are affected, based on NDRRMA data, with needs concentrated in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Gorkha. Of these all 84,270 affected people will be targeted. These figures will be refined through joint analysis of Government relief planning, sector estimates and the exposure model in Part 1, rather than through early proxy estimates. Exposure figures show where to look, not how many need help. Disaggregated data on who is affected remain limited and will improve as assessments reach the upper corridor.
