IOM seeks $20.5 million to assist 43,000 people in support of Government-led Nepal flood response

Kathmandu/Geneva 8 September 2026 – Humanitarian needs are growing rapidly in Nepal after devastating floods last month affected 84,000 people. The death toll has risen to 1,356 while nearly 4,900 remain missing, according to figures reported on 07 September by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). Roads, bridges, health facilities, and schools have suffered extensive damage. As thousands of families struggle with displacement, loss and uncertainty, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is appealing for USD 20.5 million to assist 43,000 people in support of the Government of Nepal-led response. Aligned with the inter-agency flash appeal launched by the UN and humanitarian partners, IOM's response focuses on strengthening displacement tracking and site coordination, while scaling up shelter, health, and protection assistance for displaced and affected communities. “For thousands of families, the immediate shock of the floods has been followed by immense uncertainty about their next steps," said Helene Fors, IOM Chief of Mission in Nepal. "Our priority is to ensure that humanitarian action is guided by reliable information and that critical assistance reaches those who need it most.” IOM teams are already on the ground supporting the response, including in hard-to-reach locations. IOM has conducted initial assessments at holding centres where displaced families are currently residing and has provided critical medicines to health authorities. However, sustained funding is required to expand assistance to affected communities. Priorities include emergency shelter support, particularly as winter approaches; access to health and psychosocial support services; and targeted protection support for people facing heightened risks, including women, children, older persons, and persons with disabilities. By expanding the use of its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), IOM is also helping authorities to track displacement locations and population movements to identify urgent needs so assistance can be directed where it is needed most. As thousands of displaced people shelter in schools, monasteries, public buildings and host communities, IOM will help ensure they can access assistance, services and protection as co-chair of the Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) Cluster, led by the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC). IOM urges the international community to act now and help ensure that affected communities receive the assistance and protection they need. Download the IOM Flash Appeal – Nepal Flood Response.
